GesMa takes place fifty years after canon (The Tenth Kingdom miniseries), or about two generations. King Wendell and Anthony have brought about an industrial revolution in the Fourth Kingdom. The technology was sold to the rest of the Nine Kingdoms for an acceptable sum. Anthony, mindful of how damaging certain pollutions are, created a steam technology that is far gentler on the environment. What the human scientists and engineers have not realized is that the technology eats away at magic. Very few people have realized this. Enchantresses and warlocks are some of that few, but due to their spiteful nature, they have simply moved away from the cities. The fey folk of the Seventh Kingdom have slowly withdrawn, not understanding what about technology they abhor so. Dwarves are the only people who have managed to merge technology and magic seamlessly. But they are not a prolific people, and prefer to keep to themselves.

A pair of witches, Sorrel and Fennel, want to end the technology. And their method lies in destroying those who fund the research, the royalty of each country. They sought and found the Queen Kriemhild's magic mirrors, and with those mirrors they discovered why they were so much more powerful than the others. To boost her powers, Kriemhild had trapped people within them and drew upon their power, their souls and their stories, as well as the mirror's own. They freed the people within the mirrors, and convinced them to join their cause. The people trapped within the mirrors have soaked in magic for over a hundred years. They have their own powers, unique and strange, never before seen by anyone in the Nine Kingdoms, or the world.

With this new, supernatural threat, the guardians of the Nine Kingdoms have started to awaken. The Sailor Guardians of the Nine Kingdoms have not appeared for hundreds of years, but they have the power of the greatest stories behind them: Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella. It is their duty to protect their countries from invaders with their lives. They are guided by their fairy godmothers, Rapunzel and Gretel. Prince Charming has his own fairy godmother, Rose Red. As of now, they have two missions: find the other guardians, and find the lost Queen of the First Kingdom. They do not fully understand the who their enemy is, just that they have one.

But they are not alone, Fable Knights are joining them as well. Fable Knights have been scattered across the lands since time immemorial, sometimes there were more, sometimes there were less. But always there have been Fable Knights. The greatest kings and queens were only acknowledged as truly great when they had a knight swear fealty to them. This is because the knights are able to judge and decide if someone is using their power, be it magical or mundane, in a fair manner. More profuse than Sailor Guardians, Fable Knights protect the people, not just the land they live on. They have the power of each other as well as stories to draw upon. They have no guidance as of yet, for their Lady of the Lake has gone missing. Thus, the entirety of their duties is not yet fully known.
